This Thursday night is the Eagles final preseason game. For the most avid fair weather fan they might look at it is eh, who cares. None of the starters will be playing. But for a fan like myself, I absolutely love the last preseason game. Andy Reid has always sat all of the starters in the last preseason game leaving the backups and position battles to sort out their spots on the roster. I love that. They might not always be the big names, but in some cases these guys are our future out there on the field.
A few of the big position battles are on the offensive side of the ball. Most notable is the QB situation behind Michael Vick. Let’s just say it. Foles is the prince to Vicks throne at this point. It’s only three preseason games but the kid has shown some real talent. But behind Foles their are still two more QB’s with one position available. Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards. With Kafka sitting out yet again in the preseason finale Thursday night against the Jets. That leaves Edwards with three quarters to prove why Reid should keep him over Kafka.
Edwards is the more veteran of the two. Kafka has more familiarity with the Eagles offense. I believe if Edwards goes out and has a solid three quarters then Kafka can be the odd man out. Unfortunate for Kafka because of injury. But in all honesty I’m not exactly sure how it will pan out even if Trent Edwards does have a solid performance in his three quarters.
Thursday it’s Edwards job to lose in my opinion. If he has a good game then he’s the number three guy. If not then Kafka returns. So the pressure is all on Trent’s shoulders. Both his and Kafka’s future with the Eagles lies on the arm of Edwards. It’s going to be interesting.
