Should Reid bench Vick? That’s a hot topic among Eagles fans everywhere. Whether you think he should, or shouldn’t be, you obviously have an opinion about it. Now that question has been magnified times a hundred after Vick himself said that Reid is considering a change at QB. And everyone outside of Eagles nation seems to have an opinion.
Here is what I think about it. I have been supportive of Vick all season. I still am. Everyone knows about the turnover issues that Vick has had this season. This season Vick has eight INT’s. Six of which were in the first two games. Meaning in the last five games he has two. And those two were against Detroit.
Now for the big problem. The main issue as far as the turnovers are concerned. The fumbles. The Eagles as a team have 17 fumbles on the season. Losing 9 of those. Of those 17 team fumbles, Vick is responsible for 9 of them. That’s 52% of the fumbles that Vick is responsible for. And of Vick’s 9 fumbles he has lost 5. He’s losing 55% of his fumbles.
Vick has thrown for 1,823 yards while completing 59% of his passes with a 78.6 QB Rating. Not too horrible I guess. But I would expect a little bit better from the $100,000,000 QB. Maybe that’s just me, I don’t know.
So are you truly ready for Nick Foles to take over if Vick is benched? To me, it don’t matter if he is a rookie or not. The kid showed tremendous talent in the preseason. This is a kid going into training camp that was competing with a veteran QB for the third QB spot. There was a chance he wasn’t going to even make the team. But he shined so bright that not only did he win a roster spot, he went from possible third string to knocking Mike Kafka clean off the roster to win the right to backup Michael Vick,
At this point of the season I look at it like this. The Eagles are seven games into the season with a 3-4 record. Something needs to happen on offense. There needs to be some sort of change. On offense this time. Obviously where the change is more immanent. We have been hearing all season how things need to change. Now, if we’ve been hearing that all season that means nothing has changed because we are still hearing it.
I’m actually on the fence when it comes to benching Vick in favor of Foles. Vick has been turnover happy and not playing up to his potential. Something needs to happen though and happen now. Time is running out and I’m tired of hearing still about how “we need to do better”
Now I know there are other variables other then Vick that go along with the offensive struggles. Most notably the offensive line. It’s been torn apart by injuries and lack of “the next man stepping up” philosophy. So take it all in as you may. But like myself, you have an opinion. But opinions of fans and media do not matter ultimately. It’s coach Reid’s that count’s in the end. So time will tell. Hopefully before it’s too late.
