Now this is not an argument that just Philadelphia Eagles fans put up with. Also, Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns and yes, even Minnesota Vikings fans as well. But my concern is the Philadelphia Eagles for obvious reasons. In 1948 and 1949 the Eagles won back to back NFL Championships. But what’s unique about it is the fact that those two Eagles teams are the only teams in the history of professional football to put together back to back shutouts in championship games. Then in 1960 the Eagles were the only team ever to defeat the legendary Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers in an NFL Championship game or Super Bowl. All three championships are unique landmark titles that NOBODY has ever duplicated. PERIOD!
I say that to say this. The Philadelphia Eagles are the equivalent to a family member to me. They have been part of my life, well, all of my life. So naturally I defend them. I always have and always will. But this is one topic that completely irritates the living hell out of me. In my case it comes Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants fans for the most part. What am I talking about? “How many rings do the Eagles have? O” That’s where your wrong.
The Philadelphia Eagles in fact have 3 rings. The city of Philadelphia has four NFL Championships all together. The one that most people forget is the 1926 Frankford Yellow Jackets. So that means in 1926, 1948, 1949 and 1960 the city of Philadelphia were champions of the football world. In those four seasons there was no team better. NONE!
It kills me when I hear that NFL Championships don’t count. So those people that choose not to acknowledge NFL Championships before the Super Bowl era are discrediting parts of their own team’s history in attempt to gain the edge in an argument? Makes sense only if it’s a crutch you have to lean on without knowing your team’s history.
Let’s not forget that the Philadelphia Eagles won three NFL Championships. Not the AFL which was an “inferior league” to the NFL. The Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams and Green Bay Packers. All of which were very elite teams of that time. And in all three Eagles championships things were accomplished that even the great Steelers teams in the 70’s, 49ers teams of the 80’s, and even the self proclaimed “America’s Team” Cowboys dynasty of the 90’s or the Patriot’s of the 2000’s couldn’t even do.
So don’t tell me my championships don’t count just because it wasn’t titled as the Super Bowl during that time. The only difference between the Super Bowl and NFL Championship game other than the name is the glitz and glamor. When it comes down to it it’s still the championship game. You can say what you want, but I’m damn proud of the three NFL Championships that the Eagles won.
So when you hear a Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants or even Green Bay Packers fan, amongst other fans, say your trophy case is empty and you respond with “we have three rings” you more than likely will hear them say “but it’s not the Super Bowl” then in my mind you already won that argument. Why? Because how can any true fan deny part of their teams history to benefit them for argument’s sake? It’s a lame crutch in my opinion.
But guess what? When the Eagles win their first Super Bowl we will have 4 rings, 5 for the city of Philadelphia. Frankford Yellow Jackets with one NFL Championship and the Philadelphia Eagles with three and one Super Bowl. It’s been a long time waiting. We want another championship in Philly!
