For most NFL teams the RB situation is an urgent one. More so in the sense of the depth chart. Because let’s face it, we all know that the RB position is the most important position right next to QB on offense as far as “skill positions” are concerned. So that means that most teams are trying to stock pile solid depth. Unfortunately for most teams they don’t have that luxury behind their number one guy.
Now let’s take a look at the current Eagles RB situation as it stands today. Of course the number one guy is Pro Bowl RB Lesean McCoy. Behind Shady there is second year RB Dion Lewis. Last year Lewis proved to be a solid backup behind Shady. His season rushing numbers equated to most starting RB’s one game total (23 carries, 102 yds avg 4.4 yds and 1td) but also served as the teams primary kickoff return man.
Now this year the third spot is open. Where last year was held by, then newcomer, Ronnie Brown. Leaving the position open for competition between two rookie’s, Bryce Brown and Chris Polk. I think Brown will beat out Polk for the roster spot. But Polk is still a very talented RB. Good enough that the Eagles are trying to figure out how to keep him instead of cut him if Brown does in fact beat him out.
So here is where the Andy Reid and the rest of the Eagles offensive brass need to be carefully creative in doing this. They are considering keeping Polk as the teams FB. The Eagles have always kept no more than one FB on the roster since Reid has been the head coach. With true fullbacks in camp right now it makes it tough to consider transitioning Polk to a new position to learn. Even though Stanley Havili and Emil Igwenagu are rookies, they are more experienced at the position. But I like Havili more of the two.
We are fast approaching the start of the season. So my opinion is this. If they want to give Polk a shot at FB then they need to do it now because with Reid’s history with the FB position, I don’t want to wait until week 1 for Polk to start learning a new position. There are lots of talented, young players in the Eagles backfield this year and I would love for the Eagles to keep every last one of them. It just can’t happen though. That’s the reality of the NFL. I just have to put faith in Andy Reid that he and the rest of the staff will make the right decision.
Now as of right now if I were to make the depth chart for the Eagles backfield it would look like this:
RB: Starter) McCoy Backup) Lewis 3rd RB) Brown
FB: Starter) Havili
Practice squad: Polk and Igwenagu
